Description

This course will discuss advanced applications of digital dentistry as it relates to dental implant planning and dental implant prostheses. Participants will explore several cases spanning an array of difficulty levels to better understand why utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) and digital implant planning software are integral parts of the overall implant experience. The tools to be discussed are advanced, but they share many similarities to the same software generally used to design crowns and capture dental radiographs. Participants will gain an elevated sense of how their community prosthodontist serves the interdisciplinary implant team as well as a foundation of implant planning knowledge.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore a range of simple to advanced implant cases to develop a discussion surrounding materials, methods and protocols aimed at planning implant placement from a restorative perspective.
  • Discuss the anatomical and biomechanical parameters required for implant-supported prostheses.
  • Better define the role of the prosthodontist and maxillofacial prosthodontist in your multidisciplinary dental treatment team.

LCDR Samuel Richards, DDS, MS, attained his dental degree at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) via the U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program. He remained at UMSOD to complete an advanced specialty education in prosthodontics program. He also completed a one-year fellowship in maxillofacial prosthetics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, where he took on several roles within the school, including as a member of the Implant Board and Pre-Surgical Conference committees. He also served as a member of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) Head and Neck Tumor Board. Richards currently serves at WRNMMC as the deputy director of dental services, deputy director of the Duty Under Instruction PGY-1 general practice residency program, and staff maxillofacial prosthodontist within the hospital dentistry department. His personal decorations and military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
