Osteoporosis is a world-wide health problem that primarily affects the aging population but also individuals with multiple myeloma, Paget’s disease and selected drug therapies. This course presents current medical bisphosphonate therapies for osteoporosis; research on the effects of oral and IV medications on dental surgical procedures; and the results of recent peer-reviewed publications and case reports on diagnosis, prognosis and dental management of osteonecrosis of the jaw as well as potential complications of bisphosphonate therapies.
- The participant will be able to identify the symptoms, vulnerable populations, potential oral complications and related dental surgical therapies of osteoporosis.
- The participant will learn how oral and IV bisphosphonate therapies impact dental procedures.
- The participant will be able to diagnose and create a treatment plan for patients who suffer from osteonecrosis of the jaw, a potential complication for patients on bisphosphonate therapies.
- The participant will be able to recognize risk factors for osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients taking bisphosphonate medications.
Dr. Jon Suzuki has a Presidential Appointment as Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in the School of Medicine and is Professor of Periodontology and Oral Implantology in the School of Dentistry at Temple University. Suzuki received his DDS from Loyola University of Chicago and Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Illinois Institute of Technology. In addition to his private practice, Suzuki is the immediate past-chairman and current panel member of the Food and Drug Administration Dental Products Panel; is on the faculty of the US Navy National Naval Medical Command; and holds professorships at Nova Southeastern University, the University of Maryland and Maimonides University.
