The course is designed to provide the dentist with a survey of common medical conditions that may be encountered in a dental practice. For each condition, the instructor will provide a brief overview of the basic disease process, etiology, incidence, prevalence, medications and oral manifestations commonly presented by dental patients. In particular, patients with neurological disorders, cardiovascular disease or endocrine conditions, as well as patients who are pregnant or lactating will be discussed so the practitioner can provide appropriate and safe dental care.

Learning Objectives

  • Review important concepts in oral diagnosis.
  • Recognize the prevalence, incidence and etiology of common medical conditions.
  • Understand the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of these conditions and their consequences on oral health.
  • Learn how to introduce the appropriate procedures required to optimize dental care in these patients.
  • Learn how to recognize and manage medical emergencies in these patients.

Dr. Aviv Ouanounou is an assistant professor of pharmacology and preventive dentistry at the University of Toronto (U of T) Faculty of Dentistry, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students, and is also a clinical instructor and treatment plan coordinator. He received both his DDS and MSc degrees from the U of T. Ouanounou has received numerous teaching awards, including the U of T’s prestigious Dr. A. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award (2015) for excellence in teaching and the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry’s W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education (2019). Ouanounou is a fellow of the International College of Dentists and a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has published and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and maintains a general private practice in Toronto.
